The N Word

1. What is your response to the use of the N-Word in this book? Some argue that it’s necessary to maintain historical realism, while others argue that it’s demeaning and unnecessary. What is your response? Also, how should our class deal with this word, since it’s used throughout the book and we have to talk about the book?

For this essay i am going to try to make the point that Mark Twain used the N word to maintain historical accuracy. I will talk about how the n word was used in his time and them i will talk about how it was used in the time period he was writing about. Then i will state that it is my opinion that Mark twain did not use this word to insult but to inform. I will also write that the way our class should deal with this word is to not use it in the context that it means today in our society but how it was refered to in the society that Mark Twain is trying to tell us about through his writeing

  2. yea you are making good points but i disagree in a way because i think that the n-word should'nt bent used in the book because during that era African Americans did'nt liked being called "niggers" because it was offensive for them..now is different because there is no slavery..plus the word is not offensive today in this new era,but maybe for some people may be still.

  3. I agree that the N word is something necessary to maintain historical accuracy. You might want to include how the meaning and power of the word changed from the too now and the shift in attitudes about race.

  4. another thing that you can write about is how today we always hear the n word when we listen to music. most of the songs cointains this word so if we keep on hearing it is makes it seem as if it is ok to say it and when an african american says it to another african american it is viewed as saying brother but if an person from another race says it they get very offended even as much to fight that person.

  5. Good Ideas. It seems like a good essay. Although just dont forget to maybe compare those times and know days. I think the word is really strong and it really does effect the African Americans in a way. Even though the writer my have included the word in the book to maintain historical accuracy but still not 100% convinced about it.

  7. You've got really good ideas, and I think it s good to inform that Mark Twain wasn't racist, but it was more interesting write the book with that word.
