I dont believe that this picture was racist and has been blown way out of porportion. To me this picture was clearly intended to be a joke and is how i interpretated it. Also the coulcle man does have a very strong case of not being a racsist. He was in a funk band in the sixties/Seventies and he even voulentered to help huricane katrina victims in new orelean. To called this man a racist simple over a hallowen custome is plain ridiculess. The people who are calling him a racsist are just being stuborn and wont listen to reason.

I dont see the cotati councelmen as being a racist in his picture. The man was in a funk band and he even voulenteered to help out new orleans after huracane katrina. I think people are blowing this picture of him way out of porportion and that people have gone to far in the name of racism.

The N Word
1. What is your response to the use of the N-Word in this book? Some argue that it’s necessary to maintain historical realism, while others argue that it’s demeaning and unnecessary. What is your response? Also, how should our class deal with this word, since it’s used throughout the book and we have to talk about the book?
For this essay i am going to try to make the point that Mark Twain used the N word to maintain historical accuracy. I will talk about how the n word was used in his time and them i will talk about how it was used in the time period he was writing about. Then i will state that it is my opinion that Mark twain did not use this word to insult but to inform. I will also write that the way our class should deal with this word is to not use it in the context that it means today in our society but how it was refered to in the society that Mark Twain is trying to tell us about through his writeing

To me a satire is making fun of something serious but not trying to hide the fact that it is serious. To me a good example of current day satire would be either the daily show with jon stewert or the colbert report. What makes these realy good example of satire is that the topic it is talking about is not neccisarly funny but it is being adressed as if it is funny. Here is a video from the daily show and in it he is adressin how the media with holds important information from us just to get ratings
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=222761&title=inappropriate-news-teasers
He used humor to talk to us about a topic that he felt was wrong yet by using humor to tell us he made his point more obvious to us. To me this is a perfect exaple of current day satire

In my opinion i do not think that jim is a minsteral. I believe that jim is mark twains idea of how a slave was in that time and place. I dont believe that Mark twain was trying to write about jim as a minstrel but only as an uneducated black slave. Many people will argue this by saying that black people arent like that but the truth of the matter is a that mark twain was writing about a black run away slave that he made up. Not once did he imply that jim was a real person and a true dipiction of how all black people were in that time.Jim was just Marks Twains interpretation of how he thought black slaves were in his time.

Over spring break i saw alot of racism prsent in our society. For example every time i when to a store i would always notice that the employies were looking at me and my friends the entire time as if they suspected us of doing something. This ussualy only happened when i went to the pricier department stores and it wasnt just the employees . The customers who saw us there looked at us as if thrying to tell us what are we doing in here. This to me is evedence that racism is still alive in our society even with a colored prsident. I believe that there is always going to be some sort of racism in our society because it is human nature to believe that your people are beter that other people.

How I am Perceived By Others
When people look at me I know they are trying to figure out who I am just by the way that I look and this always makes me feel a little depressed because I know that all they see is some Mexican who is most likely uneducated and probably in some gang. I know that they never see me as a full time college student who is also working part time at a grocery store in some little tourist town. This is how I believe people who do not know me usually perceive me as and I think it’s not because people have strong stereotypes towards me but more because of what they see on televisions every single night. I have gotten use to it by now but that doesn’t make things better it just allows others to keep their inaccurate perception of me.
Some people might think to themselves that nobody is ever judging them or that nobody would ever think anything wrong about them. I am not on of those people because I know that we are all constantly being judged by the people around us. Some people may deny this but I know that everyone their own interpretation of who some one is from the moment they see that person. I am not saying that their interpretations are always negative and I’m definitely not saying that they are always correct about the person. I am just saying that when ever you meet or see someone you don’t know you automatically make an assumption of who that person is. I also believe that people can never truly learn not to do this but only learn how not to let it effect how they later perceive that person.
I know that people make a lot of perceptions about me when they fist see me because of the way I look and also because of were I live. I am about six feet tall, weigh over two hundred pounds, and have a tendency to wear a lot of black and red colored clothing and I am a Mexican born and raised. When people first see me they have a tendency to think of me as a violent person because the colors I usually wear are gang related. In reality though nothing could be further from the truth because I am a person who truly hates confrontations and tries to avoid them as much as possible. As for me wearing red and black they just happen to be my favorite colors and just because some gang declared it “their color” doesn’t mean I wont were it. As for people judging me for being a Mexican there is really nothing I can’t do about it without giving up a major part of my identity. What I mean by this is that a lot of people look down on or just down right fear Mexicans who look like me and in order for me to make people not think that about me would require me to live by their standards and I just absolutely refuse to do that.

This is a perfect example of how people in our society take things for granted. I have seen kids in my old highschool say things like i hate being at school , or like this is such a waste of time. When ever they would say things like that i would always think of my cousins back in mexico who would kill to be in an american school. They will never have a chance to go to a proper school in mexico and these kids are complaining that they have to go school to begin with. That is why i think alot of people that what they got for granted because they have no idea how some people will never get to expeirience halve the things that we take for granted. This video showed how one kid wnet to school and went on with an ordinary day in his life and then compaired it to the life of the person who made the shoes he was wearing who happened to be the same age but whos life was almost exactly the opposite that of the kid who was wearing the shoes. This had a huge impact on me because before this i never really thought about how the things that i take advantage of can so drasticaly effect the life of someone i dont even know.

Tv and the effect it has on the family

T.V, And The Effect It Has On The Family
Some people may argue that television has helped their families come together more often and it allows them to feel closer with some one when they watch it with them and some would go as far as to say that television has brought our society closer as a whole. I don’t believe that any of those statements are true and have found out that in reality television has actually isolated us from the rest of society and that no seems to notice and it is because of that I totally agree with Winn and what she has to say about television in here essay “Television: The Plug In Drug.”.
When people say that television has brought their family closer than they would be with out it they mean closer in the literal sense. They think that just because they are sitting next to some one that they are bonding and that it is just the same if they were doing other things together like playing catch or going fishing. In reality all they get from those memories is watch they were watching when they next to each other and not what they doing or talking about. I say this from personal experience because I have spent countless hours watching television with my parents when I was growing up. Now years later when I try to recount what we were talking about in front of the television I can not recall anything that they said but I can remember what were watching perfectly. This to me shows that even if families do want to have meaningful conversations with each other while they are watching television that it won’t matter because in the end all that they will remember is what was on the television when they had that conversation.
Things have gotten worse now with this generation and the effect that television has had on them and their families. Now everyone has a their own television in their rooms so they don’t even get to experience watching it with the rest of their family because they can do it from the comfort of their own rooms. Like for example in my family I have gone days with out seeing my sister because she has been in her room watching television. We would call her to come and eat with the family for dinner and she would tell us that she is not hungry or that she will eat later. I would never see her because I had school in the mornings and I had to work in the afternoons, and when I did see her it felt like she was a stranger to me. This just shows the effect that television is having on this generation because I am pretty sure that I am not the only one that has been in this situation. Things will only continue to get worse for the next generation with the introduction of watching shows online through the internet.

I really dont agree with what the schools did in both cases. I am totally against any kind of censorship what so ever. I beleive that if a person doesnt agree with what i have to say then they shouldnt listen and not make me have to be censored. I am not saying that the person is to be forced to listen to what i have to say just that i should be forced to silence myself just because someone else doesnt want to hear it. That is protected by our constituition and should not be trampled on and tossed away when ever someone wants to ignore something.

MY Favorite Song
My favorite song would have to be Stronger by Kanye West without a doubt. The reason this is my favorite song is because it has my two favorite artist of all time on it; Kanye West, and Daft Punk. When I first heard this song I just thought that it was just another remix of Daft Punks Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger but then I heard Kanye West and was just blown away. I really do think that this song does represent me because like the song I to am a mix of two different worlds. On one hand I am a proud Mexican citizen and on the other I was raised in the United States since my early childhood.

My most challenging moment in education
When I think of my most challenging moment regarding my education I don’t think of test, projects, or even essays, no what think about are the friends that I used to have. This may be strange to you but the most challenging thing that I ever had to do regarding my education was to stop hanging out with my old group of friends. I made to this decision during my sophomore year of high school when I was struggling with my grades. No body made me do this I made this decision on my own. It was one of the hardest things that I have ever have had to do in my entire life.
When I said that the most challenging moment regarding my education wasn’t about any test that I’ve taken, or projects that I’ve done, or even essays that I’ve written I meant it. The reason that I say this is because when it ever came down to doing school work I never really have had any difficulties with actually doing them. The problem was that I never say doing my school work as a priority so I used to miss a lot of work because of that. This is were my old friends came into the picture because instead of encouraging me to do my work they would always do the opposite and tell me to put it of until later. I had known these guys since junior high and I would usually do what they say because I thought it would all work itself out like it always use to. It turned out that things were very different between junior high and actually high school. Bye my sophomore year I had realized that if I continued down the path I was one that I would not graduate when I reached the end and that’s when I knew what I had to do.
